Counter Culture – three centuries of Decorative Shop Signs, Fitments and Merchandising Design feature at The Winter Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair

A New Year highlight for the antiques and design world, the upcoming Winter Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair, 24-29 January 2023 in Battersea Park, will celebrate the world of antique retail design and commercial signage with a special showcase in the Foyer drawn from exhibitors.

Artisans have been creating eye-catching objects for the mercantile world for centuries; expect to find carved and painted shop signs, beautifully decorated pharmacy jars and product containers, presentation packaging, commercial display cabinets, seed and ironmongers drawers, carefullycrafted shop fitments and advertising ephemera for sale. These highly collectable pieces, many of them uniquely expressive folk art, also make for fun and unusual decoration around the home.

Alongside the curated exhibition of artisnal commercial design, on the ground floor of the Fair will be more than 130 exhibitors offering an exciting array of fine and formal antiques and 20th century design with decorative and unusual pieces dating from the 1700s to the Seventies adding to the dizzying display at this premier international event.

Art of all periods, collectable ceramics and glassware, vintage silver, architectural and garden antiques, textiles and jewellery can be found in abundance. Need more light in your winter life? Seek out a vast array of table lamps, ceiling lights and chandeliers, floor lamps and decorative wall lights, as well as mirrors, candlesticks and candelabra, gleaming silver and colourful glass to add sparkle and warmth to an interior. Discover cosy treats for snug living rooms: popular buys at this time of year are wing-back armchairs and deep upholstered sofas, footstools and ottomans, fireside accessories – fire irons, fire backs and leather-clad fender seats – and a host of side and coffee tables, home for a good book and a hot toddy. West with collectors’ and decorative glass; Panter & Hall Decorative with affordable 20th century northern European paintings; Macintosh Antiques with English Country House and vernacular furniture, exquisite mirrors for the town and country, Peter Last Ltd with antique frames in every style and size; Philip Carrol Antiques with fine antique porcelain and Staffordshire ceramics; Rhona Valentine with antique tapestries, textiles and Fortuny fabrics; decorative dealer Sans Pretention with continental design and surprising objects; Timothy Langston with English furniture, antique lamps and decorative prints; Vistakva Fine Art with fine and decorative works on paper with a focus on French 18th century prints, and Westland London with fine period fireplaces, antique mirrors, lighting and decorative antiques.

Upstairs on the Mezzanine is LARTA, London Antique Rug & Textile Art Fair, the specialist annual event for collectors and decorators focusing on exceptional weavings, antique textiles, tribal rugs and formal carpets from across all periods, continents and cultures.
