Providing postcard valuations is a highly specialist area, requiring in-depth expertise and knowledge of the many different collecting categories.
Although the picture postcards we see today were first issued during the late 1890s and early 1900s, the first postcards in use in this country were un-illustrated postal stationery cards, issued by the post office from 1870 onwards. Some were privately illustrated and sent by businesses as a way of advertising their products and services.
For deltiologists, or postcard collectors as they are more popularly known, the scenes, the social history and the industrial history depicted in early picture postcards provide a unique insight into how life was in a bygone era.
At Warwick & Warwick, we specialise in all types of old postcards; worldwide antique postcards and vintage postcards, postal stationery cards, subject postcards and topographical and social history postcards. The designs we see often range from the pre-1919 era, which is referred to as the Golden Age of postcards, right through to more modern issues.
Having been in business since 1958, we are one of the leading international providers of postcard valuations – and our team of experts boasts more than 50 years’ experience between them.
This level of expertise means we can accurately determine an old postcard’s value and provide you with postcard valuations that have been meticulously researched.
Our written postcard valuations are accurate and reliable and this service is provided free of charge, with no obligation to sell.

We will happily offer friendly and useful advice on the best way to achieve the maximum returns possible. Whether that’s in a public postcard auction, a sale by private treaty or by keeping the collection in the family for another generation, our aim is to help you to make an informed decision.

Postcard grading and its effect on value
There are a number of factors which will affect an old postcard’s value and it is important to understand these principles if you’re thinking about getting a postcard valuation.
A vintage postcard’s value is obviously dependent on its age, condition, rarity and the subject matter.
If there is a message of historical importance or a signature from somebody famous on the back, a postcard can increase in value. Likewise, stamps and postal markings can also help to increase value and interest in a card.
Whilst most postcard collectors tend to specialise in one particular area; there are general topics which always prove popular, including:
- Trams and transport
- Street scenes
- Shipping
- Railways
- Social history
- The Titanic
- Art Nouveau and Art Deco
