Hello, loves! We’re tackling an Ask Emmaline question today on where to buy stamps for wedding invitations. If you’ve ever wondered this yourself or contemplated buying vintage stamps for wedding invites, you need to read this post!
Becca writes to us with the following:
“Hi Emmaline! I’m sending invitations soon and need to get stamps. Do you have any suggestions on where to buy stamps for wedding invitations? I know I can get them from the post office but are there online places that are cheaper or offer personalized wedding stamps? Thanks in advance.”
Hi Becca! Great question. When I was wondering where to buy stamps for my own wedding invites, I went straight to the post office. In the past few years, the selection has really grown online and now it may be your best bet to buy wedding stamps online. This is because you can order in bulk and save time (it’s not always easy to get to the post office before it closes at 5pm, am I right?!) and you can choose from a huge variety of designs. We’ve done some research on where to buy stamps for wedding invitations and here is what we’ve found.

When you’re going to buy postage stamps for wedding invitations, avoid the temptation to shop from cheaper sellers — always go with USPS. At least, that’s what I would recommend to anyone I know. This is because we’ve read too many horror stories about brides, like you, also wondering where to buy stamps for wedding invitations and opting for a third-party retailer because it either a) has a really cool stamp they want, or b) is cheaper than other stores.
Not all of the third-party postage stamp retailers are bad; however, we’ve read some stories about stamps being non-certified (i.e. fake), packages of stamps arriving already used (what a waste of money), and another from a bride who bought a ton of stamps for her wedding invitations and, when they arrived, the box was totally empty. Yikes.
So, it’s best — especially when shopping online — to go straight to the source. Either head to your post office or order online from USPS. You’ll know for a fact your postage stamps will be mail-certified, mint, and the same design you ordered.
When you’re going to buy stamps for wedding invitations, going to your local post office vs. shopping online is helpful because you can have them weigh your invitation to get your required postage down to the ounce. But we know this isn’t always practical with your busy schedule. That, paired with the fact that you don’t always know what is actually in stock at your local store or what is already sold out is why I always recommend you buy stamps for wedding invitations online.
For instance, I love these vintage seed packet stamps and would use them on everything, but our local post office always sells out of them. Always! Or they’ll have one book of them and that’s it. But you can order as many as you want/need online.

Secondly, if you’re wondering where to buy vintage stamps for wedding invitations (or really hard-to-find designs), shopping online is also going to be your best bet. Another word of caution here: Ebay.com offers lots of vintage stamps, as do many retailers we spotted online through a Google search; however, you can’t be 100% certain they are mint, and many are already used so you won’t be able to use them on your wedding invitations as actual postage. The USPS online shop offers vintage stamps and their collection is actually pretty impressive.
Here are some vintage stamps we spotted in their shop:

And these stamps date back to the 1930’s and 1940’s. Very cool. From here.

And please be careful out there, guys: only buy from USPS and not from a similar shop (we’ve seen lots of imposters).
PRO TIP: You don’t have to use wedding stamps on your invitations — not all invitations must have the iconic wedding cake stamp or floral design if that’s not your style. This love skywriting style though, you must admit, it pretty cute! (Buy it here.)

Instead, when you’re going to buy stamps for wedding invitations, it’s okay to think outside the box. You can choose a design that coordinates with your wedding theme instead. You will be amazed at the huge variety of USPS offers in their shop; we couldn’t believe it ourselves. Here are some examples.
