Paul Drewett Antiques draws the crowds with his eclectic mix

ABOUT THIS FAIR:

Sue Ede, with her husband Peter Hodder and daughter Katie Ede, have been running the Shepton Flea for more than 20 years. Sue told ANF: “With pandemic restrictions now lifted and after a very busy Easter event, our Shepton Flea is back in full force on 17 July.” says organiser Sue Ede from S & P Fairs.

“Our last Shepton Flea was a spectacular success; the weather was especially kind and we welcomed hundreds of traders, collectors and bargain hunters from all over the country.”

The Shepton Flea is very popular with trade buyers because of its mix of specialist and general stallholders from across the country and a large number of private sellers drawn by the opportunity to sell their attic clear-outs. Dealers specialise in vintage jewellery and handbags, to decorative furniture, antiquarian maps and documents, all kinds of ceramics including Moorcroft and Scandinavian pottery and glass. Mantiques include vintage watches, militaria, scientific instruments and boys’ toys.

The Shepton Flea started in 2001 after Sue Ede had spent more than 20 years running antiques fairs and markets across the country under her own name and with big exhibition companies. Sue recognized an opportunity to provide the West Country with an affordable one-day fair that combined a huge range of vintage and collectable pieces offered for sale by trade and private sellers.

The Shepton Flea is open to the public from 09.30am to 4.00pm and admission isThe Shepton Flea is open to the public from 09.30am to 4.00pm and admission is £5.00 per adult, children are free. There are at least 200 stands inside and 200+ outside.

WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT THIS FAIR:

One of the best-known faces from across the country’s popular antiques fairs is Karl Smith from Skyesplace who always secures a large outside pitch selling a variety of garden statuary and decorative pieces. Make it an early call to get the best pieces!

Meanwhile, inside the Showering Pavilion, look for Paul Drewett with one of the most eye-catching stalls selling unusual and decorative paintings and vintage children’s toy cars and marine memorabilia.

At the Easter fair, one eagle-eyed visitor, James Black from Somerset, spotted a fine 60’s coffee pot designed by Susan Ellis-Williams, one of the most influential potters of the time who is now represented in the collections of the V&A. Her designs for the famous Portmeirion Pottery can still be found in almost every home.

The distinctive pattern on this coffee pot is called Magic City and it cost just £5.00 on an outside stall. As James explains, it’s a piece of designer history that’s now taking on a new found interest. Says James: “It’s a fabulous Sixties piece that links the TV series The Prisoner, the Bloomsbury Group and Rudyard Kipling. The Prisoner was, of course, filmed at Portmeirion, an Italianate village designed and built from scratch by Susan Ellis-William’s father Sir Clough Williams-Ellis (1883-1973). Susan’s mother was Amabel (also Annabel) Strachey, the well-connected writer whose cousin was the Bloomsbury author Lytton Strachey. Amabel’s parents were also friends of other members of the Bloomsbury Group, including the artist Augustus John and Virginia Woolf, and her godfather was Rudyard Kipling.’
